Google soon shut down YouTube Go in August

In an official blog post, YouTube stated that the lightweight alternative to its main app, YouTube Go, will be discontinued.

Google has revealed intentions to shut down YouTube Go, a slimmed-down version of the main YouTube app that was launched in 2016. YouTube Go will be unavailable starting in August, according to the most recent update.

In an official blog post, YouTube stated that the lightweight alternative to its main app is being phased out since it has grown obsolete over time. YouTube Go was designed for those with limited internet access and low-end smartphones that struggle to operate the main app smoothly.

Users YouTube Go should download the standard YouTube app or go to youtube.com on their browsers, according to Google. The standard YouTube app delivers a better overall user experience than YouTube Go, as well as features that aren't available on YouTube Go.

Users of YouTube Go, for example, are unable to comment, publish, utilise dark mode, or produce content on the app. They may now use the normal YouTube app to access all of YouTube Go's features.

Google also stated that it is developing more user controls to help viewers with limited data use reduce their mobile data usage. Google has previously said that YouTube Go had had more than 500 million downloads, making it one of the platform's most popular apps. In December of last year, Google overhauled the UI for Android 12 Go, among other things.
